Growing up we never locked our doors. It would not make any difference if we did. The same skeleton key would open almost every door in the village I was from.
Security took on an entirely different meaning when I lived overseas. In Iran I lived behind walls that had broken glass on top of them. In Kenya, I also lived behind walls, but beyond that, our windows were protected by steel bars. When you left the house, the doors had to be locked even if you only went one block away to get some eggs. Day and night the doors of your house remained locked.
Every night you would hear angry dogs barking to keep the robbers away. Many nights you would be woken up by the sound of someone walking on your tin roof just above your head.
That lifestyle was hard to adjust to, and to be honest, I never fully adjusted to the barking dogs and the footsteps on the roof. It was hard to “feel” secure.
The Bible tells us we can “feel” secure in Jesus’ love for us. We can “feel” secure knowing we are His children.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39 NIV
